The Export Packaging Checklist Most Industrial Shippers Skip

Export shipments fail for predictable reasons: wood compliance, corrosion protection duration, and container loading efficiency. Here's what to check before the container closes.

Wood packaging compliance isn't optional, and it isn't universal

ISPM 15 heat treatment is required by most destination markets for wood packaging material, but the stamping, documentation and enforcement details vary by country. A pallet that clears customs into one market can be held or destroyed entering another if the treatment stamp or documentation doesn't match that destination's specific requirement. Confirm compliance for the actual destination, not a general assumption.

Protection duration needs to match real transit time, including the parts you don't control

Sea freight transit time is the number most shippers plan against — but port dwell time, customs clearance delays and inland transit at the destination can add weeks that don't show up in the shipping schedule. Corrosion and moisture protection specified for a 30-day sea transit can fail if the actual door-to-door time runs to 60 or 90 days. Build in a buffer against realistic total dwell time, not just the sailing schedule.

Container loading efficiency is a packaging design problem, not a logistics afterthought

Carton and pallet dimensions that don't align with container internal geometry waste volume — every wasted inch of container space is freight cost paid on air. Reviewing packaging footprint against container internal dimensions before finalizing a carton design, rather than after the packaging is already tooled, is one of the highest-return export packaging decisions available.

Documentation protects you when something still goes wrong

Even well-engineered export packaging occasionally faces a claim. Photographic documentation of the completed load, test reports supporting the packaging specification, and clear labeling showing handling requirements all strengthen your position if a claim needs to be filed — and they cost far less to generate proactively than to reconstruct after a dispute.
