Most packaging failures aren't caused by weak materials — they're caused by packaging that was selected, not designed. A carton picked from a catalog because it was 'close enough' to a component's dimensions carries risk that only shows up after thousands of units have shipped.
Industrial packaging engineering starts from the component: its weight, center of gravity, fragile features, corrosion sensitivity and the handling it will face from the end of the production line to the point of installation. Material selection, structural design and closure method follow from that analysis, not the other way around.
Where packaging engineering pays for itself
The clearest return shows up in rejection and damage rates. A packaging design validated through drop and compression testing before production catches failure modes in a lab instead of in a customer's receiving dock — where the cost of a failure includes not just the replacement part, but schedule disruption and the relationship cost of a defective shipment.
The second return is less visible but often larger: material efficiency. Engineered packaging typically uses less material than an oversized 'safe' choice, because it's sized and structured around actual load requirements rather than a margin of ignorance.
